Working towards the Sustainability of Connectivity Conservation

In a strategic initiative on the sustainable management of ecological corridors in Albania, the first action plan for the “Polis-Valamarë-Rungajë-Moravë-Gramoz” Ecological Corridor has been drafted and reviewed by various stakeholders. This initiative is key to enhancing ecological connectivity at both local and regional levels and emphasises the importance of integrating connectivity conservation into territorial planning strategies.

The plan was prepared through an inclusive participatory process engaging diverse local stakeholders, including six municipalities, three prefectures, and three regional administrations of protected areas. This wide-ranging collaboration marks a shift towards cohesive ecological management. The plan is focused on the north part of the ecological corridor, an area around 1910 Km2, encompassing partially territories of the municipalities of Librazhd, Prrenjas, Pogradec, Gramsh, Maliq, and Skrapar. It is an area  crucial to supporting the migration of diverse species, such as the Balkan Lynx, the Wolf, the Brown Bear, and migratory birds. It promotes biodiversity across the region.

Facilitated by Eco Albania and financed by PONT through the “Improve Sustainability of South-Eastern CCAs in Albania – ISCCA” project, the development of the action plan was a collective effort. It involved contributions from local and regional institutions, local NGOs, environmental experts, and representatives from the tourism sector, underscoring the vital role of local governance and community involvement in environmental protection. Additionally, there is a commitment among municipalities and other stakeholders to start assessing potential Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs), aiming to conserve 30% of Albania’s territories by 2030.

The action plan not only focuses on documenting strategies but also seeks to engage the community in valuing and preserving ecological corridors essential for wildlife mobility. It outlines a clear vision for “well-managed zones that maintain ecological connectivity, including areas across borders, where natural resources are sustainably utilized to boost local socio-economic development”. The plan encompasses four primary themes: protection and conservation of natural habitats and biodiversity, enhancement of nature-based tourism, administrative management and sustainability, and community awareness and education.

Addressing significant challenges such as habitat fragmentation, urban pressures, and the need for coordinated management at various levels, the plan proposes a detailed action framework. This framework aims to enhance habitat connectivity, support biodiversity, and promote sustainable land use that benefits both nature and society.

Transitioning from planning to implementation, ongoing engagement and collaboration between all local stakeholders will be essential. The effectiveness and success of this initiative depends on their persistent dedication and collaboration to implement the outlined strategies.
