The PONT board members had a memorable experience visiting the Shar Mountain National Park in North Macedonia. The visit started with an introduction at the premises of the Public Institution Shar Mountain National Park where Board members gained initial insights into this park (proclaimed in 2021). They were impressed by the rapid progress this young institution has made.
Following the official introduction, it was time for some conservation actions in the park. Board members experienced the measurement of e-flow by one of the park rangers in a small hydro power plant. This is part of the impressive work related to river protection implemented by EkoSvest. The ranger and board members were caught on camera while measuring the e-flow which triggered a reaction by the operator of the hydro power plant. Continuous monitoring of e-flow, especially during the dry season, is essential to ensure that enough water is released for native fish species to flourish.
Beekeepers and the mountaineering club of Tetovo benefiting from sub-grants by Connecting Natural Values and People (CNVP) and PONT explained how important these small grants are for the people living in and around Shar Mountain National Park. Sustainable use of Non-Timber Forest Resources and Nature-based tourism are important for both nature and the people there. Board members observed a demonstration of how ‘crème’ is being made in the area from natural products with a specific medicinal value, and which is also edible!
The board members continued their journey visiting the refurbished Ljuboten Mountain Hut and its surrounding areas. The mountain hut built in 1931 is still in good condition, in thanks to the caretaking undertaken by the Ljuboten Mountaineering Club, which celebrated its 100th anniversary. Selected members are trained as assistant rangers to support the park authorities with the implementation of the Management Plan. Effective cooperation and partnering between the park authorities and civil society is a good practice rarely seen in other protected areas.
The board expresses its gratitude to all partners of PONT who organised this special visit and congratulates all of them with their impressive achievements.
