Prespa Ohrid Nature Trust – A Key Partner in the Sustainable Management of the Vevchani Springs Monument of Nature

The Municipality of Vevchani continues to successfully advance the implementation of the Management Plan for the Vevchani Springs Monument of Nature through the continuous and valuable support of the Prespa Ohrid Nature Trust (PONT). This partnership goes beyond just funding; it’s a strategic, long-term collaboration that helps the municipality protect this precious area, promote sustainable tourism, and support local development.

As the official manager of the protected area, Vevchani Municipality is responsible for implementing its Management Plan for 2019–2029. This plan sets out clear goals for safeguarding the springs and their natural surroundings, while encouraging education, recreation, and community growth. Achieving these aims requires strong commitment, technical expertise, and solid partnerships. PONT has become a trusted partner in turning strategic ideas into real, measurable results.

One major achievement has been boosting the municipality’s daily management capabilities. Special focus has been on strengthening the ranger service, which plays a crucial role in protecting the area. Rangers monitor the site regularly, manage visitors, implement protection measures, and respond swiftly to challenges. Their work is essential in turning the management plan into practical action.

Thanks to PONT’s support, vital equipment has been supplied to improve efficiency. This includes patrol gear, a vehicle for fieldwork, office and computer equipment, professional tools, and even a drone for surveillance. These resources have greatly enhanced the municipality’s ability to monitor the site effectively and maintain high standards of protection.

The grant has also funded important upgrades to infrastructure within the protected area. Old and damaged facilities have been reconstructed and modernised, making the site safer and more accessible for visitors and locals alike. New lighting systems and refreshed visitor infrastructure have created a safer, more welcoming environment while preserving the natural beauty of the springs.

Collaboration with Eko-Svest has been key in ensuring high standards of conservation. Their expertise and support have strengthened management efforts and demonstrated the power of working together—local authorities, civil society, and environmental groups—all committed to nature conservation.

A highlight of this project is the permanent exhibition at the Multicultural Center “Kosta Srbakoski.” This educational display raises awareness about the area’s natural values and helps visitors, students, and the wider community understand the importance of protecting nature for the future.

Vevchani Green continues to grow as a well-known local brand for sustainable and eco-friendly tourism. This initiative highlights the town’s commitment to balancing environmental protection with local economic development. Vevchani is increasingly recognised as a model destination that combines conservation with responsible tourism.

A key lesson learned is that effective protected area management relies on strong local ownership, ongoing community involvement, and reliable long-term partnerships. The collaboration with PONT has shown how strategic support can empower local municipalities to turn plans into real results.

Vevchani Municipality values its partnership with PONT as essential to the success of its conservation efforts. The progress so far proves what can be achieved through trust, shared goals, and long-term teamwork.

Looking ahead, the municipality is eager to continue this fruitful partnership. With PONT’s support, Vevchani Municipality will keep working to ensure that the Vevchani Springs Nature Monument remains a shining example of sustainable management, environmental responsibility, and eco-tourism in North Macedonia and beyond.
