Since September of last year, the association “Une, Gruaja” has been actively implementing the project “Local & cross-border actors work together in the environmental protection of the Prespa – Ohrid region.” The primary objective of this project is to enhance the local community’s capacity for biodiversity protection by exchanging best practices and knowledge among actors in the Lake Ohrid Region.
The association “Une, Gruaja” has issued an open call to all associations, active groups, and individuals interested in contributing to biodiversity protection; encouraging community activism, particularly among young people, students, and schoolchildren. They are invited to present creative ideas which the association will financially support. Financial support for several initiatives was already finalised in May. These include a green caravan, an awareness video showcasing the natural beauty surrounding Lake Ohrid, a short film highlighting the impact of human activity on the environment, a study trip to promote nature and raise awareness among young people about biodiversity protection in Prespa National Park, and an installation aimed at reducing plastic usage, among others.
Local organisations such as “Ringjallja,” “Korça Alpin,” “Pogradec Youth Council,” “Enheleus Lihnid,” “Discover Pogradec,” and “Red Cross Ohrid,” have emerged as key actors in promoting activism for the protection of nature and biodiversity in the Prespa-Ohrid region. They have successfully engaged girls and boys passionate about outdoor sports, enthusing them to explore and promote beautiful locations to local and foreign tourists. These organisations have also invited experts to engage with young people, formulating messages and recommendations for the area’s residents.
Local initiatives have proven to be catalysts for activism in protecting the environment. Moving forward, policies and legislation must foster a mutually beneficial relationship between human well-being and preserving the environment, recognising the importance of protecting biodiversity for a sustainable and prosperous future. Recognising that nature is constantly evolving, enriching biodiversity, and providing opportunities while forgiving our past transgressions is crucial. It remains as ever essential to prioritise biodiversity protection for the sake of natural values, sustainable development, and healthy life.
