On July 12th 2024, the Pogradec Youth Centre organised an enlightening initiative called “Interpretation of Nature in the National Park of Prespa”. This event aimed to connect young participants with the rich biodiversity and cultural heritage of the park while fostering a deeper appreciation for the natural world around them.

The concept of “interpretation of nature” involves educating individuals about the natural environment in a way that enhances their understanding and appreciation of its value. This approach combines scientific knowledge with cultural narratives, encouraging participants to engage with their surroundings meaningfully. It aims to inspire stewardship and conservation, ensuring that future generations cherish and protect their natural heritage.

The initiative kicked off at the Tourist Information Centre, where specialists introduced the young participants to the ecological and cultural significance of the National Park of Prespa. They learned about the park’s diverse ecosystems, the importance of biodiversity, and the delicate balance between human activity and nature. This foundational knowledge was essential for understanding the broader implications of their interactions with the environment.

Following this enlightening session, the group visited the Sterjo Spasse Museum in Gollomboç. Here, they delved into the life and work of Sterjo Spasse, a notable Albanian writer whose literary contributions reflect the beauty and complexity of the region. This visit highlighted how nature has shaped local culture and artistic expression, reinforcing the idea that the environment is not only a physical space but also a source of inspiration and identity.

The best part of the day was a guided walk along the Gollomboç-Platform trail. As the participants explored this picturesque landscape, they encountered a rich array of flora and fauna, identifying various tree species and observing local wildlife. This hands-on experience fostered a sense of connection with the natural world, allowing them to see the direct impact of biodiversity on their lives.

At the Platform, stunning views of the lake provided a perfect setting for reflection and discussion. Participants engaged in meaningful conversations about the lives of local residents, the potential for sustainable tourism, and the importance of preserving both natural and cultural resources. These discussions underscored the vital role that community engagement plays in fostering environmental stewardship.

The “Interpretation of Nature in the National Park of Prespa” initiative successfully equipped young participants with knowledge about their environment while instilling a sense of responsibility for its preservation. By integrating education, culture, and hands-on exploration, the Pogradec Youth Centre empowered these young individuals to become advocates for their natural heritage.

Upon returning home, participants carried with them a deeper appreciation for the connection of nature and culture, feeling inspired to share their experiences and insights with their communities. This initiative exemplifies the importance of fostering a generation that values and protects the unique natural and cultural landscapes of their homeland. Through programs like this, we can cultivate a lasting commitment to environmental stewardship, ensuring a vibrant and sustainable future for the National Park of Prespa.
