“Nature is not simply a resource for human use, but a community to which we belong.”
The “Unë, Gruaja” Association organised an awareness-raising activity with students from the University in Korça city on the topic “Ecotourism and ecosophy as pathways of sustainable economic development and environmental awareness in the community”. The activity brought together 26 young men and women, students of the Biology, Chemistry, Political Science and Administration & Social Policy programs. The aim is to strengthen youth engagement in nature protection, promote eco-conscious livelihoods, and low-impact tourism in biodiversity.
The moderator Eriseld Kalemaj aimed to encourage reflection on ecosophy – a philosophical approach that focuses on the harmonious relationship between man and nature. At a time when the impact of the environmental crisis is becoming increasingly evident, ecosophy invites us to review not only our behaviors, but also the values on which we build development.
The discussions focused on the understanding of the ecological crisis as a consequence of a deeper moral and cultural crisis. It was emphasised that technological and economic progress, if not accompanied by environmental ethics, risks destroying ecosystems. Man should no longer be seen as the lord of nature, but as an inseparable part of it.
Through the philosophy of Arne Naess and Félix Guattari, the participants were introduced to the concept of “deep ecology”, where environmental, social and mental ecology are intertwined. Only through this integration can we build a new development model that respects nature as a value in itself. The discussion brought concrete ideas for action:
- Introducing ecosophy into education: through curricula, modules or training for pupils and students.
- Direct experience with nature: organising visits to natural habitats to build real sensitivity to biodiversity.
- Development of responsible ecotourism: that preserves natural heritage and brings income to the community without harming the environment.
- Creation of ecotherapy centers: to promote psychological well-being and connection with nature as a form of self-care.
- Advocacy for ecosophy-based public policies: involving the community and institutions in an ongoing dialogue for the protection of nature.
- The activity showed that young people are willing to think differently and act differently. For them, nature is not just a landscape – it is coexistence, it is an opportunity, and it is a responsibility.
