Albania’s stunning protected areas, including the Albanian Alps National Park and Korab-Koritnik Natural Park, are beloved destinations for both tourists and nature enthusiasts alike.

Have you heard about the enchanting “Trail of Colours”?

Nestled within the picturesque Korab-Koritnik Natural Park in Kukes, Albania, the Trail of Colors has emerged as a top mountain tourism spot. Its mesmerising mountainous terrain, adorned with vibrant flowers, captivates visitors from around the globe. This area boasts rich biodiversity and untouched landscapes, offering a truly immersive natural experience. However, the growing influx of visitors calls for improved infrastructure to ensure their safety and preserve the area’s pristine beauty.

SIRA, a local community organisation in Kukes, Albania, has taken action to enhance the Trail of Colors through a grant implemented by CNVP Albania and funded by PONT (Prespa Ohrid Nature Trust). With this support, SIRA has rehabilitated 5.5 kilometers of the trail, installed informative signboards, and implemented orientation signs, all while adhering to rigorous standards. These efforts not only make the trail safer and more accessible but also protect the biodiversity and natural habitats.

According to Petrit Sinaj, chairman of SIRA, “The project has not only improved the trail but also enhanced our organizational capacities and spurred member engagement.”

Following SIRA’s lead, eight additional trails in the Albanian Alps and Korab-Koritnik protected areas have been revitalised and equipped with informative signage. Moreover, a total of 19 organisations, businesses, and farmers have received support to implement similar nature-based tourism projects, fostering sustainable development in these regions.

Nature-based tourism in protected areas holds immense potential to boost local economies, alleviate poverty, and foster rural development. By investing in infrastructure and preserving biodiversity, we can ensure that communities thrive in harmony with nature. Join us in exploring and protecting Albania’s natural treasures!
