Over 18 months, the “Aligning Management Objectives with Tourism Impacts” project unfolded as a dynamic effort to balance the increasing demands of tourism with the need for environmental sustainability in the Korab-Koritnik region. Led by Build Green Group and supported by funding from PONT, this initiative was a significant step toward harmonising tourism activities within protected areas while preserving their natural and cultural heritage.
At the heart of the project was a fundamental question: Can information technology enhance the effective management of protected areas and help tourists create more meaningful and sustainable natural experiences? Addressing this challenge required a multifaceted approach integrating technology, community engagement, and cross-border collaboration.
The project began with a thorough environmental assessment of the impact of tourism in Korab-Koritnik. This foundational work not only analysed the area’s current state but also considered future development plans, ensuring a roadmap for sustainable growth. The insights gained from this phase laid the groundwork for the project’s next steps, setting a clear vision for how tourism could coexist with conservation.
The following phase of the project focused on the Kukes and Diber local communities. Stakeholders from various sectors were engaged to raise awareness about the potential consequences of unchecked tourism and the importance of proactive management. Workshops and discussions disseminated the findings from the initial assessment while tree-planting campaigns in both cities served as tangible symbols of the project’s commitment to environmental stewardship. These efforts mitigated some of the impacts of tourism and fostered a stronger connection between the community and the surrounding environment.
A groundbreaking aspect of the project was the development of a digital tool designed to monitor tourism activities in real time. This tool consists of a mobile application for on-site data collection and a GIS platform that integrates and displays the data for public access. Maintained by Build Green Group, the platform became a repository for tourism data and a critical resource for decision-making. It enabled stakeholders to monitor the impact of tourism on the protected area, enhancing transparency and fostering collaboration among local authorities, businesses, and conservation groups. The innovative use of technology offered a compelling answer to the project’s central question, demonstrating how digital tools could transform management practices and elevate the visitor experience.
As the project progressed, its reach extended beyond its national borders and into North Macedonia. Intensive training sessions with various stakeholders, including community members, researchers, local authorities, NGOs, tourism businesses, and guides took place. They were taught how to use digital tools, and data collection events were organised to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the region’s tourism dynamics. By integrating advanced technology and emphasising cross-border collaboration, the initiative strengthened regional conservation efforts and set new standards for sustainable tourism management.
The project revealed several important lessons along the way. The digital tools developed proved invaluable for collecting and monitoring data, becoming essential for informed decision-making. However, the process also highlighted the importance of continuous training to address digital literacy gaps and encourage active stakeholder participation. The involvement of local communities not only enriched the project’s outcomes but also fostered a sense of ownership and pride among residents. Meanwhile, the challenges posed by remote and rugged terrains underscored the need for adaptive and flexible strategies.
Looking ahead, the project envisions scaling its impact by expanding the GIS platform, enhancing the mobile application, and securing additional funding to sustain its efforts. Strengthening cross-border partnerships and promoting the tools through campaigns will be key to ensuring their adoption and long-term success.
By integrating innovative technology, fostering collaboration, and empowering communities, this initiative has laid a strong foundation for the future of sustainable tourism in Korab-Koritnik and beyond. It serves as a reminder of what can be achieved when conservation and tourism are aligned, leveraging tools that help us better protect nature while enriching the experiences of those who explore it.
